"Joisey"

When I tell people I’m from New Jersey, I continue to get the same response, "but you don’t have a jersey accent."  Not everyone from New Jersey is as they are portrayed in movies, People get the impression we have Italian brooklynesc sort of accent.  Let me first start by saying no one says "joisey,” we Jerseyans actually hate when people say New Jersey in this jersey shored referenced tone.  There are a few instances that people have caught me in some way saying some words different such as drawer.  I do in fact pronounce the word “drawr” or I catch my roommate slip sometimes and when he tries to say water, he says “wooter” which to this day I still don’t understand why.  One of the most interesting accent details I've been told by someone was only true of people from new Jersey, was that we like to add a wuhh to words we elongate and really emphasize, this took me quite off guard when I started noticing after I would say a long no, it would be heard as “noooowuhh.”  But I soon realized this happens with a lot of people, if you don’t believe me try for yourself.  Say a long nooo, or ask one of your friends a question so they will say a long no and try to catch it.  If you don’t say wuh at the end, then good for you, if you do, better watch out people may think you are an Italian guido from the jersey shore.  So all in all, no we don’t call it “Joisey” no we aren't all from Italian heritage and speak as Guido’s, and yes we do have something’s that make us different.  But we like this criticism; because if we weren’t criticized then we would believe we are irrelevant, but in fact we know we live in the best state in the United States of America.  

It's a Jersey Thing is designed to tackle all of the stereotypes placed on people from New Jersey.  They may be true they may be false but i guess we will just have to find out.
